Is Racism On the Rise?

Last week radio host Don Imus refered to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "Nappy Head Ho's" and "Jiggaboos" in a rant that was also televised on his MSNBC cable show.

In other news, teens in Virginia were charged with hate crimes after recently vandalizing Black churches in Stafford County.

Last Halloween some college students covered themselves in black shoe polish, dressed up in gold chains and hip hop gear to mimic African Americans.

I don't feel that racism is on the rise... I feel that it is being exposed a little bit more than usual. Every so often people have a slip of the tongue or a brain lapse and forget that it is not appropriate to say these things. I went to a school in a small town that was all white and I have heard and seen it all. Once a person gets offened then they realize that they did something wrong. This is just another example of what grandma taught us " think before you speak"

I was listening to the radio and heard some of the comments but I didnt know what u all were commenting on so I came to the website. Racism is not on the rise considering racism is what was behind slavery, lyching, jim crow, segregation and all that. Racism is not on the rise, it has never gone anywhere, just like the Klan and skinheads. They still exist. Just because we work with white people, just because black people are doing everything white people do does not mean that white people like us. It means that they have learned that it looks better for them to keep their nasty comments and attitudes to themselves or among themselves. That comment was a trifling thing for that guy to say but if the girls looked a hot mess then i think he was commenting on that compared to the cute team. Dont get me wrong, that guy is just an ignorant @$$ and if he'd say that on air, there is no telling what he and his friends talk about in the privacy or their own dens. And all the people calling the radio, get out of here. They know they say some nasty mess about white people too and smile in their faces on pay day. Be for real people. The one girl the radio and said she was offended when her teacher identified "all black people are lazy" as a sterotype. Well, that is a stereotype, so why was she mad? The man didnt say that he agreed with it, he just said that it was one. It is a class full of black people as she said so why would he want to bring up a bunch of asian stereotypes? I bet that same girl thinks all white people like green bean caserole. And my last comment is for those individuals who think it is funny to dress in gold chains and black face... um they need their @$$e$ whooped... by people in Richard Nixon masks.

I don't think racism never left. I feel that our people and community have ignored it for so long. That we have truly allowed ourselves to forget that it was not no more than 40+ years ago that we were being lynched, drink from a colored people only fountain and the list goes on. At what point do we learn that we need to educated our youth on the struggles of their ancestors, so that this type of behavior from a radio personality is not looked at a week later. If this had been the latino or any other races community this man would be fired. There needs to come a point and time when we will say enough is enough. We need to stop sitting down and letting others speak on our behalf. If we don't stand for something, we fall for everything.
